APO Production Planning and Detailed Scheduling is a set of functionalities around In-house Production Planning, External Procurement Planning, Resource Scheduling and Sequence Optimization. PPDS is primarily divided in two areas - Production Planning and Detailed Scheduling.

Production Planning is mainly used for short-term planning with precise times in the production plant (for in-house production and external procurement). In production planning, requirements are covered by the generation of planned orders (for in-house production planning) as well as purchase requisitions or scheduling agreement schedule lines (for external procurement planning).

Detailed Scheduling schedules orders automatically on the resources, taking various planning conditions into account (such as the component or resource availability).
